About the Book Lists

The Destination Reader book lists have been designed to support teachers with choosing texts when teaching different genre of literature. In order to provide children with an immersive experience with a particular story or genre, they suggest examples of texts at three specific levels:

• Aspirational Texts: Books to be read by adults and shared with the children. They are books at a higher reading level or are of too great a sophistication for children to read independently.  Children will gain a wider experience of genre, vocabulary and language structure.

• Teaching Texts: Books of an appropriate level to teach children the skills of reading. They have accessible language, structures and appropriate content.  These books will provide the core texts for the teaching of reading.

• Independent texts: Books of an appropriate level for children to read independently. Children can use these texts to explore genres and stories on their own

All the texts are suggestions using the genres outlined in the curriculum. Texts which are aspirational lower down the school become teaching or independent texts as children move up the school. This facilitates the development of a core body of literature through which children can explore genre, plot structures and text features throughout the school.

The book lists are also split into core and recommended titles:

• Core Books: To get you started on the Destination Reader program, we recommend you use these titles. 
• Recommended Books: Not compulsory, but excellent reads that can be used to compliment the Destination Reader Program
