Why Do We Mix Schemes and Real Books?
In the past we have often been told by teachers and parents that children are memorising characters, story lines and even the text of books that they read a lot and therefore they aren't really progressing as well as they could. So that's why in the home reader boxes we decided to mix different schemes with real books, exposing children to a number of different formats, characters and illustrations. Not only does this make reading more exciting for them, it also means that they don't memorise the characters or words in a book.
What Schemes Do We Use?
We use the popular scheme titles as well as some of the newer schemes. We make sure all titles and books are suitable for the year group and age range of the children the boxes are for.

Welcome to the Sheels Educational Blog, here we will update you on all the happenings at Sheels and if there are any products or services that we think are extra special- you'll find posts on them over here too!
Home Reader Boxes are a great way to bridge the gap from the lower level readers to the higher levels. Each box contains 100 books from all genres, including both real and scheme, fiction and non-fiction titles. Books are labelled according to their reading achievement/book band level and placed in the appropriate year boxes.
Boxes are made bespoke to your requirements and there are three different boxes available per year group- so it is easier for you to share books across classes. No one box is the same, therefore if you have specific levels you want to focus on they can be accommodated.
The Mayans have proved to be a particularly difficult topic to find resources on...they're either out of print or soon to be published...this doesn't exactly help our teachers who still have to teach the topic. Here at Sheels we've been working hard to source books that can be used for teaching on the Mayans, and we have found two very useful publications for use in primary schools:
Do you have any books on the Mayans or any other Ancient Civilizations that you absolutely love? We'd love to hear from you...
We have also found a few websites that could also be of help:
If you are interested in any of the books mentioned in the post or any of our services, please do get in touch and we will be more than happy to help!
