About the Hamilton Trust
Hamilton Trust is a UK charity working to support high quality teaching and learning. We provide comprehensive English, Maths and other planning materials for primary teachers; we run maths projects at both primary and secondary level; and we provide pedagogical training - all under the guidance of Professor Ruth Merttens.
About Professor Ruth Merttens
Ruth is currently on secondment from the University of St. Mark and St. John, Plymouth. She is responsible for overseeing all the educational content on the Hamilton site. She dreams up the new initiatives, such as Code-Breakers, Topics and Early Years Packs, writes materials and works closely with other authors. All of the materials on the site, from single resource sheets to integrated subject-teaching Topics, fall within her remit.
Ruth also does a great deal of national in-service training, and talks to teachers up and down the country. Demand for her training is very high and her availability is therefore constrained; nonetheless, she believes that it is important to teach one day a week in her local primary school.
Ruth's advice to early years teachers is to trust their professionalism and common sense: “Stick to what you know, never mind the labels, or how you might be positioned or perceived for doing this or that. We must not become bogged down by bureaucracy. The job is to excite and enthuse children, and to teach them."
